May I help you?

This evening my wife and I went into a local bar and grill to eat dinner. We pulled into the parking lot and there were a half dozen or so cars in the parking lot. We hadn't been into this location before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I opened the door for her and we went in. The first thing I noticed was that most of the patrons were seated at the bar engaged in conversation. We were greeted with a sign that said seat yourself. I've always felt uneasy about the level of service at an establishment with a sign like this. My thought is that are they "too busy" to help you to find a place to sit sown. We had frequented a different location of this bar and grill in Lawrence and had always had a pleasant experience along with good food. We started to walk to the left but none of the tables looked like they had been cleaned off so we went around the other way passing the bar area. We passed a man and I greeted him and he just looked at me like I had two heads. Oh well, we're here for the food anyway. There were 3 tables on the right side so we took the one that looked the cleanest. We had our dinner and the food was good and the service was better than I expected (based on the sign) but not up to par with the other location.
Based on our experience in this bar and grill, and the expectations of people, is this a reason a person doesn't even attempt to go to church? The person that has never went to church or has went to church and experienced this level of service? Our worship service should be focused on God and who He is, but not to hinder those in attendance from participating. If "our sign" or attitude to a first time attender shouts out -seat yourself- why would they ever return to another service. If we miss this chance to connect with the unbeliever we may never get a second chance. We need to value each and every soul as God does. He loves each and every person on the face of the earth including me and you.

  1. This is a great correlation to the church. We should do what we can to make people feel welcome! I hate it when I walk into a place, and I feel like they are looking at me like I have two heads! I just want to run!

    Thanks for sharing this!
