Balancing Time
My thoughts have centered on time lately,
how God is not bound by time and also how I am restricted by time. We each are
given a fixed amount of time on this earth. How we use each moment of time is
determined by each of us. We can use it to work to run ourselves until we have
no energy or sit not accomplishing anything. The key is to find the balancing
point of working and resting. Each one of us is designed with differences in
each. Someone may be designed with a tremendous amount of drive and energy.
Another designed with a greater amount of rest needed. The driven person can
easily "drive" himself (or herself) out of energy if taken to the
extreme. The laid back person can do just the opposite and sit around and not
be motivated to do anything. The following two Bible verses have been brought
to my attention in this matter.
Psalm
46: (ESV) “Be still, and know that I am God. I
will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the
earth!”
2
Thessalonians 3:9-11(ESV) It was not because we do not have that
right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even
when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not
willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk
in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies.
God has given us a model of how to live in
creating the week of seven days. His model has one day set aside to be
different than the other six. After living in this world for over five decades
I can see the benefit of rest. Life is a marathon and not a sprint. If we push
on without rest we can suffer from burnout which can lead to other problems.
The day of rest allows our physical bodies to recover and our minds to recover
mentally. I have had trouble in the past finding this balance of work and rest-
and still struggle in that matter. On the days of rest, I still focus on my
list and everything I "need to get done" and struggle when I don't
accomplish what I set out to get done. I can finish 90 percent of what I set
out to do and only focus on the 10 percent I didn't get done. I give God glory
for the perfection of His creation and need to look to Him for guidance in how
I should live my life. He knows the number of my days and how much rest I'll
need along the way. Walking with Him leading the way will make my life much
more fulfilling. Jesus Christ is the example in working and resting that I need
to follow.
